Pumpkins for Halloween

We planted pumpkin seeds in July into one of our raised beds.   We wanted to have them ready for 31st of October, which is Halloween.   During Halloween the children dress up in fancy dress.   We have partieswe 'dook for apples.'   We fill a large container with water to float apples in it, we then have to try pick up the apples with our teeth!   It is great fun as everyone gets very wet!!    On Halloween night the children go 'guising.'   it is an old Scottish customthe children go around the houses, dressed in their costumes.   In exchange for singing a song, telling a joke or saying a poem the people have to give them some fruit, sweets or money.   It is a popular festival.    The houses often have a pumpkin in the window which has a face cut out of it, lit with a candle on the inside.   Many years ago people used to use large turnips to do the same thing.    Have a look at our photographs to see how big our pumpkins were.   We were very proud of them!

In July, the pumpkin plant was healthygrowing welll in our raised bed. Here you can see the beginning of the flower of the pumpkin. The flower is growning biggeropening.
