Sicily’s Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto (South-Eastern Sicily) consist of eight towns: Caltagirone, Militello , Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo, Ragusa, Scicli. The 1693 earthquake destroyed these towns; however, a mass reconstruction occurred. The rebuilt structures represent baroque architecture.

Sicily’s Aeolian Islands are on the list of World Heritage Sites for their volcanic landforms. Volcanologists have studied the islands' two types of eruptions, vulcanianstrombolian, since the 19th century. Vulcanian eruptions occur because of pressure on gases trapped in magma. Strombolian eruptions are mild eruptions that last only a few minutes, producing red sparks.
